Actually, either one will do, as long as you clear down to the one that's to the lower left of the hidden 1 bamboo. For me, it was clearing out the left until I reached the hidden 9 bamboo.

It's tempting to match the two 8 characters you see. Don't. Dig for another in the third row instead.

I found using the buried 1bamboo in the 4th row with the one showing in the 6th. 3 bamboos in 4th row is stacked on top of another one.
